So what is the Barclays Golf Tournament 2009? Well as you may have guessed it is sponsored by banking giant Barclays, much like they sponsor the Barclays Premiership which is a huge football championship in Britain.

This years tournament begins today (Thursday, 27th August 2009) and is being hosted at the Liberty National Golf Course in Jersey City, New Jersey. The lucky winner will win up to .35 million and the total for the purse is .5 million. The current defending champion and last years winner is famous Indian golfer, Vijay Singh listed under PGA’s top players list.

The 46 year old Fijian player is amongst some of the best golfers in the world. He won the PGA Championshi in both 1998 and 2004 and the Masters in 2000 and was ranked number one in the world for 32 weeks in 2004 and 2005.

This years tournament is coming just two weeks after the U.S. PGA Championship. The playoff system used known as the “FedEx Cup” has gotten some ill recieved comments about it in the past as most die hard golf fans don’t really like the setup of the play.
